The Tiwi Land Council chief executive has accused retailer Anaconda of applying 'its own name to Tiwi country' as part of a promotional competition.

The Tiwi Land Council says a promotion by outdoor supplies retailer Anaconda "disregards Tiwi ownership of country".

According to Anaconda's website, competition winners are awarded a trip with nine friends to "Anaconda Island" at the Tiwi Island Retreat. "It's one of Australia's premier barefoot destinations, providing the perfect base to enjoy everything the island has to offer."The website promotes "Anaconda Island" as being "extremely remote", while offering "a wide range of adventurous activities".

"We are concerned that a commercial entity would deem it appropriate to apply its own name to Tiwi country," Mr Ferguson said.Mr Ferguson said since learning of the promotion, the TLC had sought external legal advice and had been "canvassing the views of Jikilaruwu traditional owners". However, he said those partnerships needed to be "grounded in mutual respect, protecting the rights and interests of Tiwi people".

The decision is unusual as it is uncommon for lawyers to be required to pay costs when their clients lose a case. The judge ruled that the Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) had engaged in 'a form of subtle coaching', making it a party to the case. Santos is building a pipeline from its new Barossa gas field in the Timor Sea to a processing plant in Darwin, which the Tiwi Islanders argue will impact culturally significant sites.
