A crisis accommodation program for the pets of families escaping domestic violence is set to get an extra $200,000 in funding from the Queensland government.
"Pets themselves are actually victims of domestic and family violence more commonly than you would actually want to know about," she said.
"People who use violence take advantage of that care and that love and that connection to animals. They will often use them with threats of harm or actual harm." While the service generally offers 28 days of emergency accommodation, Ms Ten-Grotenhuis said some pets needed to stay longer.
