The 39-year-old sergeant has been charged with five counts of contravening a domestic violence order.
A Queensland police officer has been suspended for alleged domestic violence breaches on the same day a commission of inquiry began its probe into the police service’s treatment of domestic and family violence victims.
Earlier on Friday, the $3.4 million independent Commission of Inquiry into Queensland Police Service responses to domestic and family violence held its first sitting in Brisbane. Counsel assisting the commission Ruth O’Gorman said police had already given evidence to the Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce report handed down in December, which found a “widespread and negative culture” undermined the work of the QPS trying to address the issue.O’Gorman said evidence from those police officers painted a picture of “negative attitudes, values, beliefs and working practices”.
“Input from police officers, whether current or retired, about their experiences of responding to DFV, and their experiences of the cultural attitudes expressed by their fellow officers within their workplace, will be critical to the ability of the commission to properly understand the nature and extent of any such [cultural] issues.
