The Prime Minister has indicated he could echo the words of Bob Hawke and declare a public holiday should the Matildas triumph at the World Cup next month.

Australia is co-hosting the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with New Zealand beginning next month and the Matildas are looking to win the trophy for the first time.

“But rest assured should the Matildas win the World Cup on home soil I reckon there will be a race by premiers to declare a public holiday.” “Another new sports holiday before a day of recognition or mourning for Aboriginal genocide, sounds about right,” commented one. “Too late to call a national holiday after the Socceroos huge win against Denmark last night. But if we win the FIFA World Cup… that might be a different story,” he tweeted during the Men’s World Cup.
