Two anti-abortion activists have lost a High Court appeal after arguing safe access zones outside clinics breached their free speech.
The High Court has ruled safety buffer zones outside abortion clinics in Victoria and Tasmania are valid.
The two activists asked the court to review their convictions, arguing the safety zone laws breached the implied freedom of political communication in the Australian constitution. The states say the laws are designed to protect the privacy, safety, dignity and wellbeing of patients and staff. "With today's decision, women in Victoria and Tasmania never again need to worry about being forced to run a gauntlet of abuse to access abortion care. Safe access zones are here to stay," Ms Walters said.
