Voters told a More In Common poll they trust Keir Starmer more on most 'culture war' issues but they do not want 'woke' to be a priority ahead of the next election
Tory centrists have urged Rishi Sunak not to abandon a focus on the economy heading into the next election as polling showed Conservative voters don’t see “anti-woke” policies as a priority.
The Prime Minister has sought to keep the right of his party on side by focusing on cultural issues, but is understood to be increasingly convinced that he may also get electoral advantage from the gambit too after the Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election result. The Tories have also launched attacks on Sir Keir over crime and illegal immigration, claiming the Labour leader cannot be trusted to clamp down on anti-social behaviour in the UK and criminal gangs operating in the English Channel.
Sir Keir is preferred by 30 per cent of voters to “take the right approach to tackling climate change” with just 23 per cent backing the Prime Minister and the rest having no preference. The Labour leader leads 26-20 on “solutions to the debates on trans people and women’s rights” and 30-27 on “crime and anti-social behaviour”.
Just 27 per cent said that “tackling political correctness and woke issues” should be one of the most important policy areas ahead of the election expected this year, with 73 per cent disagreeing. Voters in the “red wall” in the north of England are a little more supportive of the Government’s approach but those in the “blue wall” are even more sceptical with 78 per cent saying it should not be a priority.
