The inclusion of Apple and a number of other international corporations as 'local content' suppliers for Tasmania's new Spirit of Tasmania ferries has been blasted by the Opposition, with the government saying 'there are things local businesses cannot produce but they can procure them'.

The government says it remains "committed to supporting Tasmanian businesses to deliver the final fit-out" of the ships, which are currently in Europe.Tasmania's government had promised "local businesses" would be "reaping the benefits" of the tens of millions of dollars allocated for "local content" in the construction of the two brand new Spirit of Tasmania ferries built in Finland.

The Tasmanian government has denied that leasing the ships out while their berth is being constructed would result in them being deemed "second-hand".While it could be years until the Spirits are in local waters, they were promised a "Tasmanian local content" fit-out back in 2021 worth up to $100 million.

"The finishing touches — such as artwork, mattresses and blankets — have already been purchased from Tasmanian businesses, and the timing of the final installation will be determined following any leasing arrangements that are made." Combined, they have yet to hit that $100 million, but there is still time, with Spirit V still under construction in Finland.Tasmanian enterprises named as suppliers for the ferries fit-out include Waverley Mills , Tas Isle Trading , TasVac , Handmark Gallery , Fairbrother , Life Raft Systems Australia and Tas Shipping Supplies .
