The latest addition to the Spirit of Tasmania fleet has departed Finland and is en route to its temporary berth in Leith, Scotland. Despite initial estimates of $24.3 million for storage until mid-2026, the exact costs remain undisclosed by TT-Line, prompting calls for transparency from the Tasmanian premier.
Spirit of Tasmania IV has departed its shipbuilder's port in Finland and is making its way to Leith port in Edinburgh, Scotland .
Spirit IV, which left its Finnish shipbuilder on Saturday, was originally meant to be in Tasmania by now as part of a program to replace the two aging vessels that currently operate in Bass Strait. TT-Line acting chief executive Kym Sayers said berthing costs at Leith were commercial-in-confidence and yet to be finalised.
"But indeed, what we're trying to do, endeavouring to do, is have our ships leased as soon as possible to get the best value for taxpayer dollars."New Spirit of Tasmania ferries to be secondhand by the time they arriveTasmania finds itself in a farcical position where the brand-new Spirit of Tasmania ferries it purchased may end up being hand-me-downs by the time they reach the state's shores.
"These trials are a vital step in confirming Spirit IV's quality and readiness as we prepare her for future operations."Supplied: marinetraffic/Jani TammistoMs Sayers said the shipbuilder, RMC, was contractually obligated to include up to $100 million of "local content", much of which has already been installed.
