ANALYSIS Apple’s annual developer conference kicks off Tuesday, Australian time, and promises to be the biggest in recent memory, with its first new product category for years.
All those announcements, plus an exposition of the new operating system that will be required to run the mixed-reality headsets, mean the opening keynote address by Apple CEO Tim Cook looks set to be one of the most important in recent Apple history.
Companies such as Microsoft, Meta and HTC have been toiling away in the headset category for years, without setting the world on fire, and Apple’s expected announcement of a competing product is no guarantee of success, either. But just as the Apple Watch went on to become not just the world’s best-selling smartwatch but the best-selling of all watches, the launch of an Apple headset would be a “huge validation to the nascent XR [Extended Reality] ecosystem,” Mr Scarfe said, using the catch-all term that includes VR, MR and Microsoft’s augmented-reality technology.
A new version of the iOS software which runs iPhones is widely expected, though iOS 17 will not be as big an overhaul as iOS 16 was, it has been said.
