An armed suspect opened fire on police during a pursuit in Sydney's southwest, injuring a police car but escaping after crashing and fleeing on foot.

At about 1.30am overnight, police were called to Edensor Park with reports an armed man had tried to gain entry to a home.A police operation has ceased in Varroville in Sydney 's south-west. (9 News )The car was then seen a short time later on Cowpasture Road, Hinchinbrook. They broke that off shortly after due to safety concerns.

Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell said that during the pursuit, the passenger, who police believe to have been the man who tried to break into the Edensor Park residence, leaned out the window and fired several shots, two of which hit a police car. The officer and police dog in the car were uninjured, the bullets striking a wheel rim and the grille. At about 1.50am, the sedan crashed on St Andrews Road, Varroville, after police deployed road spikes. The passenger fled the scene on foot. Thurtell said the man was 'quite possibly or even probably' armed, with police reporting he had something in his hand. Despite an hours-long search of the area, involving PolAir and tactical officers, the passenger was not found. The search has now ceased. Thurtell said there was believed to be no risk to the public and that the passenger was not thought to be in the area any longer. It's believed the gun used to fire at the police car was one of the handguns seized. Thurtell said the incident at the Edensor Park residence was believed to be targeted, with both the 20-year-old arrested man and the Edensor Park resident known to police. The resident was not home when the attempted break-in occurred, but notified police with security footage
