A 33-year-old man died in police custody in southwest Sydney after being arrested for allegedly trying to enter vehicles with a knife. Police used a taser but it was not discharged. The man suffered a medical episode during transport to the hospital and died.
Police have declared a critical incident over the death of a man after he was arrested allegedly trying to enter vehicles armed with a knife in south-western Sydney . Police were called to Tahmoor at about 1pm on Friday following reports the armed man was attempting to stop traffic on Remembrance Driveway and enter people’s vehicles. When officers arrived they located the 33-year-old lying over the bonnet of a vehicle which had stopped in traffic on the roadway.
Police said an officer drew a taser and verbally directed the man to the ground, which he complied with. Police then arrested and handcuffed the man with the assistance of members of the public, and a knife was located at the scene. There was no discharge of the taser probes, police said. As paramedics transported the man to hospital under police guard he suffered a significant medical episode. The ambulance stopped by the roadside while paramedics rendered critical medical attention. Two further ambulance crews and police officers rushed to the man’s aid, but he was unable to be revived and died at Liverpool hospital a short time later. A critical incident team from Bankstown Police Area Command will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The incident is also subject to an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and the investigation will be overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission
