Thailand's government is set to hand out 1 million marijuana plants to households, which can grow as many as they like. | Chris Barrett thailand marijuana

Thailand will on Thursday become the first country in Asia to effectively legalise marijuana in a landmark move its government hopes will supercharge its wellness and tourism industries and generate as much as 10 billion baht per year.

He announced last month that the government would hand out 1 million plants to households, which can grow as many as they like by registering with their provincial authorities and can use an app to be approved for commercial distribution.. Extracts that exceed 0.2 per cent of tetrahydrocannabinol , the main psychoactive chemical in marijuana, will still be considered illegal and there will be stiff penalties of 25,000 baht or three months jail for getting high in public.

Thailand’s marijuana liberalisation comes after it permitted the consumption of the drug in 2018 for medical and research reasons via appointed hospitals and clinics, becoming the first in south-east Asia to take that step. It further eased rules in 2020, allowing low-THC parts of the plants such as leaves, stems, stalks and roots to be cultivated by licensed growers and included in a burgeoning array of cannabis-related products such as drinks, food and cosmetics.
