Jacinta Allan's first trip abroad as premier couldn't come at a more critical time. As she steps of the plane into Delhi, her mission is clear: mitigate the damage.
Premier Jacinta Allan is travelling to India , and wants to provide resassurance that Victoria is still a welcoming place for international students.has restricted the state's most lucrative cash source, education, and Ms Allan's destination — India — is the Victoria n education sector's biggest customer.
The planned international students cap has come at a challenging time for the Allan government, restricting a key Victorian industry as mounting government debt is placing the state under pressure. The University of Melbourne deputy vice chancellor Michael Wesley said he hoped Ms Allan would use her visit to India to send a "corrective" message of positivity amid the turmoil for his sector.
"You can't do business with India from afar you need to visit and forge relationships it's just futile otherwise," Mr Mooney said. Mr Mooney believes the premier's journey to the Indian capital will be critical in helping her understand how the complex nation's bureaucracy and government work. The Liberal Party has often discussed ways in which it can start winning over Indian-Australian voters in Melbourne's outer suburbs. One Liberal MP told the ABC "it's a concern to a lot of us how our party hasn't successfully captured a group of voters that identify as industrious and entrepreneurial — it's a community that embodies our party's values".
