Mortality data provided to the ABC by Victoria's health department show the deaths of unvaccinated people, and the elderly, loom large among the 2,171 COVID-19-related fatalities recorded in the first half of this year.
The department said that people whose vaccination status was categorised as "unknown" until it's established, usually make up about 3 per cent of deaths.
"Personally, I don't feel in any way comfortable or happy with the fact that there are 10 to 20 deaths a day in Victoria, and often 50 deaths a day across the country," Dr Trauer said. Professor Blakely said people should not wait and were better off getting a booster COVID-19 dose if they were eligible for one."They're not as great at stopping any infection, but they do dampen transmission and, right at the moment, we're dealing with a surge of COVID."
"It really is a story of greatest risk of having serious illness and dying being inversely associated with the number of doses that you have had," Professor Bennett said. "It's going to be, going into a wave of transmission — if that's caused by a variant or a winter wave — 'Have you been vaccinated in the previous six or 12 months?'Many are unvaccinated by choice
