A man avoids jail after staging a robbery at his grandmother's betting agency — but he will have to live with her disappointment.
A 20-year-old former betting agency worker who staged a robbery with his best friend to recover thousands of dollars he lost gambling at the TAB his grandmother owned has avoided jail time.Investigators tracked mobile phone movements, later conducting searches of the offenders' homesAlexander James Abey and co-accused Harry Michael Corner, 19, pleaded guilty to fabricating a story about being tied up and robbed at the TAB in the Hobart suburb of Derwent Park in April this year.
He then staged the robbery with help of Corner in order to recoup the funds, with the duo stealing $24,000 in cash. Tasmania Police later posted on their Facebook page a CCTV image of a hooded figure dressed in black and wearing a backpack, and called for information about the incident. In sentencing, Acting Justice David Porter said the men's"outrageous behaviour" was"deserving of strong condemnation".
