Honey Insurance founder Richard Joffe says Australia can be a more attractive market for startups than the United States in certain industries, but only if workers are prepared to “go to war” and sacrifice work-life balance in the search for success.

Joffe, who recently closed Australia’s third-largest series A funding round for his Honey Insurance startup, said Australia’s more “apathetic” working culture, where people are more likely to “head to the beach” than “work around the clock” meant that committed entrepreneurs could gain an advantage that is not available in the ultra-competitive United States. “If you want to be exceptional at something, you’re not optimising for work-life balance,” Joffe says.
