Australians could be forced to stump up even more money in order to receive permission to travel to the United Kingdom.
Australians could be forced to pay more to gain approval to travel to the United Kingdom under changes to the new electronic travel authorisation scheme.
At the moment, the ETA comes at a cost of £10 but a proposal put before parliament on Thursday aims to lift the maximum fee that can be charged to £16 . The application process involves uploading or taking photos of a person's passport and their face but travel details do not need to be entered. Travellers simply transiting through the United Kingdom without going through border control also needed to obtain an ETA but that requirement is being scrapped.
The proposed ETA fee increase is part of a suite of changes designed to"reduce the reliance of the migration and borders system on taxpayer funding". "The changes to ETAs, certificates of sponsorship and nationality products are forecast to generate an additional £269 million a year," the statement said.
