Two doctors are pleading with the federal government to grant visas to a Ukrainian family trying to flee the war. 9News

The couple had decided to offer up two bedrooms of their Gold Coast home to house a Ukrainian family, finding a website that connects people with those impacted by the war.

"They were just low, you couldn't see any sort of emotions or any expressions on their faces, they were completely demoralised," Navruzov said. A spokesperson for the Home Affairs department said it does not comment on individual cases but explained it had granted 8000 migration and temporary visas to Ukrainians so far."The Department is seeking to engage directly with applicants and their representatives, as a matter of urgency where we need additional information to finalise applications," the spokesperson said.

"It's not quite as simple as having someone living in your spare bedroom for a few weeks or a few months. There is a duty of care that really needs to be taken on." Since 23 February 2022, the Department has granted over 8,000 migration and temporary visas to Ukrainians in Ukraine and hundreds more to Ukrainians elsewhere.

As at 13 June over 3,400 Ukrainian nationals have provided their acceptance of the Australian government's offer of Temporary Humanitarian Stay in Australia.
