Australians looking forward to their Christmas deliveries are being warned about a new scam involving Australia Post. 9News

It comes as the communications watchdog released its list of the top five telephone scams for 2019, with fake NBN retailers topping the list.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority said everyone need to be vigilant about scams over the Christmas holidays. ACMA's Fiona Cameron said the fake Australia Post texts claim there's a problem with a delivery and asks recipients to click on a web link and input personal and financial details.

"If you receive a suspicious SMS messages, delete the message and do not click the link," Ms Cameron said."We have seen a spike in this scam during the lead up to Christmas and we are working with telcos to tackle the problem," Ms Cameron said. The other top phone scams include people claiming to be computer tech support workers, followed by people claiming to be from the 'do not call' register.
