In front of a sellout crowd, USL Championship side San Antonio FC captured the defining moment of its seven-year existence with a 2-1 win over Austin FC last night.
Over 1,000 Austin FC fans made the trip to Toyota Field in San Antonio for Austin FC’s clash with San Antonio FC
In fact, the Open Cup – which includes every professional team sanctioned by the U.S. Soccer Federation – was the only format in which the two clubs separated by just 80 miles could meet in a competitive match. For one night only, the largely untapped sports rivalry between Austin and San Antonio got to play out over 120 minutes on the pitch and in the stands, and it was pure electricity.
And yet, Austin FC was just eight minutes from escaping with a 1-0, nothing-to-see-here win in 90 minutes. After a largely even and uneventful first half, Diego Fagundez broke the ice in the 47th minute, burying a stellar Driussi pass into the top of the San Antonio net. It felt like all the Verde would need to advance.
