“I know it is completely legitimate for island states which are already experiencing and have for many years the effects of climate change to urge us to do more,” said Wong. “Labor has had their foot on the accelerator on climate, but now we have to see what is under the hood. They know that they need to reset relations the Pacific and climate is the key to that”.
Conroy said Australia’s target was “credible” and said in his meetings in Fiji, Pacific leaders had backed Australia’s push to host the UN climate conference with the Pacific in 2024. “These realities are complicated by the shifting geopolitical landscape that we have no choice but to engage with,” he said. “Our region remains in a precarious position both in the short and long term.”
