The Australian government has announced a review of national care standards for transgender and gender-diverse children and adolescents, focusing on the use of puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones.

Health Minister Mark Butler announced a comprehensive review of Australia's care standards for transgender and gender-diverse children and adolescents. The review, spearheaded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), will delve into the evidence supporting the use of puberty blockers and gender-affirming hormones for young people experiencing gender dysphoria.

Minister Butler emphasized the importance of evidence-based practices and community confidence in the care provided to these young Australians. He stated that the NHMRC, as the nation's leading health and medical research body, will develop new Australian guidelines informed by public consultation and international research. These guidelines will be developed with an expert committee comprising individuals with lived experience. He anticipates interim advice on puberty blockers by mid-2026. The review comes amidst calls from various groups, including former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, anti-trans campaigner Katherine Deves, and medical professionals, for a national inquiry into the use of puberty blockers. The Queensland government had also initiated its own inquiry into the matter. However, Minister Butler asserted that the NHMRC's preeminence and statutory mandate to issue clinical guidelines make it the appropriate authority for this national review. He urged the Queensland government to align with the federal initiative and discontinue its separate review. Meanwhile, both the federal government and the Coalition have distanced themselves from the debate as the next election approaches, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based decision-making and state and territory government responsibility for gender dysphoria clinics. The safety and well-being of children remain paramount, according to both sides
