Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has slammed X owner Elon Musk for not caring about the “harm he is allowing on his social media platforms”, while defending the government’s proposed laws to punish big tech for the spread of misinformation.A proposal included in the government’s sweeping changes to social media laws would allow it to fine big tech up to 5 per cent of their revenue for failing to prevent the spread of misinformation.
“We are making some very reasonable proposals to protect our kids. We have rules about all sorts of things, car seats, pool fences, button batteries, to try and keep our kids safe.”Plibersek and fellow panellist Nationals MP Barnaby Joyce both shared concerns for kids’ mental health.“Since 2010 we have seen a doubling of the rate of young people going to hospital for mental health concerns, and we know social media is harming our kids.
