Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he had a “very constructive and warm conversation” with US President Donald Trump when the pair spoke on the phone this morning.Speaking from Canberra, Albanese said he envisages Australia will continue to engage diplomatically with the US.“We of course, will use all of the human assets at our disposal. Australians will always stand up for Australia’s interests. And we will do that - we’ll continue to put the case ,” Albanese said.
Asked what he thought of Australia’s chances of getting an exemption from the US’ planned 25 per cent tariff on imported steel and aluminium, the prime minister agreed he was confident the deal would be done.“If you have a look at what we’ve achieved already, it’s been a tremendous start to the relationship,” Albanese said.“ Penny Wong being invited to the inauguration.
