Australia is handing over its privacy 'in the name of security' | Sky News AustraliaPsychiatrist Dr Tanveer Ahmed says the notion of privacy has changed in Australia as, in the name of security, increasingly extreme forms of monitoring are being allowed. \n\n“Drones now patrol the city in Melbourne patrolling social distancing protocols,” Mr Ahmed said. \n\n“The Covid safe app monitors our movements.\n\n“Our internet behaviour already produces gigabytes of data for commercial use for the likes of our Silicon Valley overlords- Google, Facebook, Amazon etc.”\n\nMr Ahmed said Sydney has about 60 thousand surveillance cameras and was only a step away from incorporating facial recognition systems. \n\n“In the name of security, we've allowed all types of monitoring that civil liberty types are up in arms about,” he said. \n\n“Every new technological, legal, and cultural development raises concerns about the death of privacy. \n\n“No one wants us to be like China, but authoritarianism is on the march in even the places we consider bastions of freedom. \n\n“Privacy is central to liberty. \n\n“But arguably, privacy is also a privilege. \n\n“Do we really have a right to privacy and how do we draw up the limits?”\n\nImage: Getty

Victoria has seen ‘signs of hope’ yet policing ‘is now the real worry’ | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says the idea that Victorian police, who did nothing to stop BLM protests during the last lockdown, should go so hard with a zero tolerance attitude against anti-lockdown protesters now is 'surely repugnant to most people'. \n\nHe said while there are signs of hope in the state as they get the coronavirus infection rates down, “the real worry in Victoria at the moment is policing”. \n\n“What we saw yesterday in the Victoria Markets yesterday was just obscene”. \n\n“Remember this police force has got a lot wrong lately.\n\n“And we know they have to deal with a lot of idiots but the police have to be sensible, and show restraint.\n\n“The Victoria police have been hassling pregnant women sitting in parks, and they've handcuffed a pregnant woman at home, in an unnecessary, heavy handed implementation of draconian government rules.”\n\nMr Kenny also said it is “staggering that the Left of politics should be so deaf to the concerns about police bully tactics and the infringement of personal liberties”. \n\nImage: News Corp Australia

Those who preach identity politics ‘are full of hypocrisy and opportunism’ | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says those who preach identity politics “really are full of hypocrisy and opportunism” amid a recent 'ugly' event to take place within South Australian politics. \n\nMr Kenny said an “ugly political story” has emerged which involves Liberal John Dawkins who is a member of the South Australian Legislative Council. \n\n“Last week when the cushy job came up to be the president of the Upper House he decided to run against his own party's official nomination, and he got it,' Mr Kenny said. \n\n“But what has this got to do with identity politics,” he said. \n\n“Well, of course Dawkins only got to do this because the Labor Party voted for him”. \n\n“Yes, Labor, that's the same Labor Party that preaches about the need for more women in leadership positions, they even promote quotas for women in politics, and they also argue we need more ethnic diversity in politics and leadership”. \n\n“But in this case, to make mischief for the government, Labor voted for the old white guy instead of the Liberal Party's choice' which was set to be Jing Lee, who is the first Malaysian born Chinese migrant to be elected to the South Australian Parliament.\n\n“But Labor blocked her from a leadership role in order to embarrass the South Australian government,” Mr Kenny said. \n\n'A cheap political stunt mattered more than supporting a migrant woman to achieve a significant political position'. \n\n'Just remember this the next time you hear labor talk about diversity'.

Discrimination complaints at Senator set 'a worrying example for free speech' | Sky News AustraliaTasmanian Senator Claire Chandler says discrimination complaints levelled against her for advocacy on women's sport and women's sex-based rights sets a “very worrying example for free speech in Australia”.\n\nThe Tasmanian senator has been subject to a complaint under the Tasmania anti-discrimination act for her view surrounding the need for woman-only sports, and single sex toilets and change rooms. \n\nMs Chandler wrote an article in The Mercury in July where she said “you don’t have to be a bigot to recognise the differences between the male and female sexes and understand why women’s sports, single sex changerooms and toilets are import”. \n\nShe was accused of inciting hatred against transsexual people. \n\n“We have seen time and time again,” Ms Chandler told Sky news host Chris Kenny.\n\n“Australians being dragged in front of tribunals, commissions, these quasi-judicial bodies, on the basis that they have engaged in public debate, put forward their own views on the world, and instead of being able to exchange in a public debate in civilised form, they’re getting dragged along to a tribunal to answer for what they’ve said.\n\n“We’ve seen it happen with Peter Ridd, we’ve seen it happen with Archbishop Porteous in Tasmania, this is just the latest in a long line of worrying trends in this area”.\n\nMs Chandler said these tribunals and commissions were demonstrating a sentiment of wanting to “shut down debate completely and censor any views that differ from the vocal minorities”. \n\nImage: Getty\n
