A woman from Currimundi, Australia, becomes the 100th woman killed in 2024 due to alleged violence, highlighting the ongoing crisis of femicide in the country.
A 47-year-old woman from Currimundi has reportedly become the 100th woman to die from alleged violence in Australia this year. She died in hospital after an alleged assault on December 23rd. A 58-year-old Currimundi man was taken into custody and charged with assault occasioning bodily harm ( domestic violence offence) and obstruct police.
Sherele Moody, a journalist and founder of The RED HEART campaign and Australian Femicide Watch, has been tracking the number of women killed by violence in Australia. She shared on Instagram that the woman who died on the Sunshine Coast was terminally ill and that the alleged assault occurred while her 15-year-old daughter was at home. Moody expressed her anguish, stating, 'To know her child was present when he murdered her - I have no f***ing words. This epidemic of violence against women is not ending, it's not decreasing, it's getting worse.' She added, 'Men are doing so little to end violence against women - and women are treading water waiting for change, waiting to help our sisters and waiting for the next life to be erased.' Another Instagram page, mums4refugees, shared the 'Killed Women Count' with a fresh call for the government to do something to end gendered violence 'in any form'
