Millions of Australians celebrated the start of 2025 with dazzling fireworks displays across the country, with Sydney's iconic show taking center stage.
Australia has welcomed in the New Year in style, with Sydney 's iconic fireworks display capping off a night of celebration across the country. More than a million people descended on the New South Wales state capital on Tuesday, as crowds jostled for a front row seat for the festivities. Bars, hotels, parks, and harbourside streets were packed throughout most of the afternoon, with locals and tourists alike taking advantage of the warm weather on the final day of 2024.
Such was the clamour, organisers begun closing off some harbourside viewing points from as early as 11am. Similar scenes played out in other states, with the Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens, and the Shrine in Melbourne packed with onlookers and thousands queueing up along the Brisbane River.Celebrations kicked up a gear from 9pm in most cities, with fireworks and other lightshows lighting up the night sky ahead of the main event. Then, the countdown was on, as millions of Australians held their breath in anticipation for the start of the new year. They were not disappointed, with brilliant colours dazzling onlookers as fireworks again illuminated the night. In Melbourne, 27 skyscrapers were lit up as pyrotechnics were supplemented with the largest New Year's Eve rooftop laser display in the Southern Hemisphere.
