Despite earlier concerns about train strikes, Sydney's iconic New Year's Eve fireworks display is set to go ahead as planned. Over a million spectators are expected to gather around the harbor to witness the dazzling light show.

When tonnes of fireworks erupt in the Sydney sky to celebrate the end of 2024 and the start of 2025 at midnight on Tuesday, those with the best views will have long forgotten about the possibility of the city’s iconic event being cancelled. New Year’s Eve celebrations were threatened by train strikes, prompting warnings from the NSW government the event could be called off because of safety concerns.

But with those fears put to bed, more than a million revellers are expected to gather at the 50 front-row vantage points across the harbour city, which will be one of the first in the world to hit midnight, to cheer in 2025. Where you can watch the fireworks At 9pm, the first of Sydney’s two fireworks shows will light up the harbour when the Calling Country display created by Indigenous group We Are Warriors erupts as a celebration of land, sea and sky, with projections of Aboriginal fisherwoman Barangaroo stretching across the bridge. Three hours later, the New Year will be welcomed by a 12-minute display blasting 53,500 fireworks across the city to a soundtrack created by Australian screen composer Luna Pan. Fireworks will be set off from four sails of the Opera House and five city skyscrapers, and for the first time, will exploding from drones midair, as well as displays from the western side of the Harbour Bridge.
