The 1915 Picnic Train Attack in Broken Hill, New South Wales, is often labeled as Australia's first terrorist attack. However, some historians argue that this label oversimplifies the event and ignores important historical context.

A passenger train in far west New South Wales more than a century ago has often been described as 'Australia's first terrorist attack'. But some historical experts say that is not an accurate representation of what happened 110 years ago. On January 1, 1915, two men — Gool Mohamed and Mullah Abdullah — shot at a train full of 1,200 civilians.

An exhibition about the event at the city's Sulphide Street Railway and Historical Museum has renewed interest in the attack, prompting some local historians to suggest that 'political' labels ignore important aspects of the story. Standing at the Broken Hill Cemetery, Peggy Corney reflects on a life taken too soon. Ms Corney never got to meet her aunt, Alma Cowie, the story of her tragic death in the 1915 Picnic Train Attack is one that still lingers in her family's history. ABC Broken Hill: Oliver Brown 'There was always the remembrance of Alma. We always went to the cemetery on those certain dates and Christmas and birthdays and things like that,' Ms Corney said. with her boyfriend, Clarrie (Clarence) O'Brien. ABC Broken Hill: Oliver Brown During the train ride, the passengers spotted two men behind an ice cream cart on the side of the tracks with a Turkish flag; When they heard shots fired, they thought it was part of the New Year's Day festivities. But they soon discovered the horrifying reality when Alma Cowie fell forward into her boyfriend's arms, where she died. Ms Corney says she still thinks about the toll the tragedy took on the family. 'I think as you live your own life, you put yourselves in the parents' shoes and you sort of tend to think how you would feel if you lost children at that age,' she says. Historian and curator of the Sulphide Street Railway and Historical Museum, Christine Adams, says the 'harrowing story' deserves to be remembered, not only as part of Broken Hill's history but Australia'
