It is one of the holiest events on the Jewish calendar, but this year's Jewish New Year is looking starkly different in large parts of the country.
For Phil and Abra Kaplan, this week's Rosh Hashanah is particularly significant.
"It's incredibly special to be able to introduce him to our traditions, our rituals and to the special foods that we eat," Ms Kaplan tells SBS News. The Rabin family enjoy apples dipped in honey, a Jewish tradition that hopes to bring in a sweet new year.For adherents in Melbourne, the situation is all too familiar, having marked Rosh Hashanah under COVID-19 restrictions last year.
"Our goal here is to isolate ourselves from the virus, but to not isolate ourselves from each other", he says.Rabbi Gersh Lazarow blows the shofar.More than 20,000 different IP addresses joined in last year, Rabbi Lazarow says, and he is hoping for a similar number again.
