After Jess Hull won silver in the 1500m, the unsung Australian track-and-field team quietly surpassed the golden era of the 1960s.

Hull’s run was an epochal moment for Australian athletics. The medal is the first for Australia on the track since 2012, and the first for Australia at this distance since Herb Elliott in 1960. She is the first Australian woman to win a 1500m medal.The seven Aussie track-and-field medals of the past week – one gold, two silver and four bronze – have eclipsed the golden era of the 1960s, when the team brought home half a dozen at both the 1964 and 1968 Games.

“There’s no excuses, there’s nothing. It could have been different, which is a hard pill to swallow. But I’ve got some more in me,” a tearful Little said afterwards. “It’s easy to doubt yourself, especially on this stage, but I think I just had to remind myself that every time I’ve asked my gears to be there this year, they have been,” she said.

She could see Kipyegon accelerating away, but felt that if she just stayed on her coattails she would follow her onto the podium. What she didn’t see was Britain’s Georgia Bell steaming up behind her.
