Australia is facing a teacher shortage crisis, with not enough young people choosing to become teachers and too many leaving the profession. Over the past decade, the number of people studying teaching at university has decreased by 12%. While there are currently 80,000 students studying teaching, only 50% will complete their degree, and an additional 20% will quit within the first three years of teaching. The difficulties of unpaid practical experience and lack of support for early-career teachers are contributing factors. The government is considering bringing in teachers from overseas and encouraging former teachers to return to the profession.
