Australia will reopen its embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine, nearly three years after it closed due to the Russian invasion. Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced the reopening during a visit to the capital city.

Nearly three years after it closed, Australia will reopen its embassy in war-torn Ukraine. Foreign Minister Penny Wong arrived in the capital Kyiv via train from Poland on Wednesday, announcing Australia’s Ambassador will return to the Ukrainian capital for the first time since Russia’s invasion. It follows criticism that Australia has been too slow to restore its diplomatic mission. The United States and the United Kingdom reopened their embassies weeks after the war began in 2022.

The Albanese Government has always said we would reopen our Embassy in Kyiv when it is safe to do so. I was pleased to announce we are reopening the Embassy. From next month, Australia’s Ambassador as well as our Deputy Head of Mission will return to Kyiv. Canberra is also providing $76 million in new funding for Ukraine’s reconstruction and energy supplies. What happens to Ukraine matters to Australians.
