Australian airlines Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia fall short of international punctuality standards, according to Cirium data.

Australia’s three major airlines - Qantas , Jetstar and Virgin Australia - lag behind their international counterparts in punctuality. All three airlines placed at the bottom of international ranking data released on Thursday. Qantas , the best-performing among the Australian airlines, had 73.85% of its flights arriving within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. This data, compiled by aviation data provider Cirium, uses the widely accepted 15-minute arrival window as a performance measure.

Jetstar and Virgin Australia recorded on-time performance rates of 73.39% and 72.7% respectively. However, Qantas’ performance pales in comparison to Aeromexico, the Mexican airline, which boasted almost 87% of its flights landing within 15 minutes of schedule. Saudia, Saudi Arabia’s flagship carrier, ranked second globally with an on-time performance rate just above 86%. Japan Airlines topped the Asia Pacific region with an on-time performance of 80.9%. Cirium has rated airlines for timeliness for 16 years. CEO Jeremy Bowen noted that 2024 presented challenges for airlines due to extreme weather patterns and a summer technology outage, highlighting the achievements of the top-ranking airlines in getting passengers to their destinations on time. Despite a computer outage that led to thousands of flight cancellations in July, Delta Air Lines, based in Atlanta, earned the highest ranking among US carriers, achieving an on-time rate of over 83% to secure third place globally. United Airlines and Alaska Airlines followed closely behind, with on-time performance rates of nearly 81% and just over 79% respectively, according to Cirium. Other regional winners globally, as identified by Cirium, include the Spanish low-cost carrier Iberia Express, Panama’s Copa Airlines, and South African low-cost carrier FlySafair
