A young child has died after contracting the mosquito-borne disease Murray Valley encephalitis in the Northern Territory. 7NEWS
Four cases of MVE have been recorded so far this year, an increase on the two reports across the past five years in the NT.The only way to prevent MVE is by avoiding mosquito bites.
Officials said that in some cases the disease can escalate to delirium, coma, permanent brain damage or death.Rising cases are not uncommon following dramatic weather events that increase mosquito numbers, including heavy rains and floods.
