Australian workers on the minimum wage should get a pay rise later this morning as the data so far suggests recent wage increases have not added to inflation, says assistant minister for defence Matt Thistlethwaite. The assistant minister was asked during an interview on Sky News about the government’s position on the annual wage review and whether an expected increase in the minimum wage would add to inflation.
Asked about the risk of worsening inflation, Thistlethwaite said economic data suggested recent wage rises had not thrown fuel onto the fire. “The data indicates that it’s not,” the assistant minister said. “When we came to government, inflation was in the sevens. It’s now down into the three and a half range. So, the data indicates that we’ve had real wages increasing, inflation has been moderating.
