Five Australian Federal Police officers have launched defamation action against the ACT government and its former Director of Public Prosecutions, Shane Drumgold, over a complaint he made about the way officers handled the prosecution of Bruce Lehrmann.they were defamed in a letter Mr Drumgold wrote to the ACT Chief Police Officer on November 1 2022, in which he complained he had felt pressured by police not to pursue Mr Lehrmann's prosecution.
In it, Mr Drumgold complained to then-CPO Neil Gaughan that police had engaged in "a very clear campaign" to persuade him not to proceed with charges against Mr Lehrmann. They have also claimed Mr Drumgold acted "maliciously" by releasing the letter under the FOI Act, and in doing so committed "misfeasance in public office".
The AFP action is the latest in a series of defamation proceedings stemming from the case of Bruce Lehrmann. Senator Reynolds is herself suing Ms Higgins, and her fiancé David Sharaz, over social media posts made after Ms Higgins claimed she had been raped at Parliament House.
