"People expressed concerns when I said I was going to India," Carmen said.
After several hours of convincing, Carmen agreed to fly to Kashmir in the country's north, rather than take the Lonely Planet-approved bus directly to her destination. "I learnt very quickly that if he [Rafig] got into an angry state, he'd take it out on me, so I wanted to keep him happy," Carmen said.
Using the same phone number Carmen contacted her father on, her friend Kat was able to reach her and work out her location.Carmen said her friend "didn't get off the phone for 24 hours".
