JobKeeper row revives Chalmers leadership speculation | Sky News AustraliaAn almighty row within Labor over JobKeeper has revived speculation about the leadership ambitions of Shadow Treasurer Jim Chalmers, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell. \n\nThe shadow treasurer had proposed to move disallowance motions in the Senate to allow airline workers DNata and university workers to be included on the wages scheme. \n\nMr Clennell said the proposal was first shut down by shadow cabinet due to spending concerns. \n\n“At shadow cabinet, the leader Anthony Albanese, according to several sources, said he was concerned about spending and the proposals needed to go through the proper expenditure review committee process,” he said. \n\n“But then Jim Chalmers, spooked the Greens would move the disallowance first, took it the matters to full caucus.”\n\n“Deputy Labor leader Richard Marles told him it needed to go through a proper process and Penny Wong chipped in as well.”\n\nMr Clennell said the proposal led to a “shouting match” between Dr Chalmers and Labor’s Senate leader Penny Wong amid a meeting of the party’s expenditure review committee. \n\nThe events have revived speculation of the shadow treasurer’s leadership ambitions and has some within Labor concerned he is “cosying up to the Left” in case the Eden-Monaro by-election destabilises Mr Albanese’s leadership. \n\n“Some of the colleagues are concerned that Jim Chalmers with some of his spending proposals is looking to cosy up to the Left in the hope of a future leadership ticket with Tanaya Plibersek and that this could even be contemplated if Labor were to lose the Eden Monaro by-election,” Mr Clennell said. \n\n“Party powerbrokers I have spoken to dismiss the idea of replacing Albanese before the next election\n\n“They expect Labor to win Eden Monaro and point out you need 70 per cent of caucus support these days with the rules to roll anyone.”\n
