Police boat Nemesis was called in to escort the yacht to Bateman's Bay, on New South Wales' south coast.SA barrister and Bowling skipper Ian Roberts mourned Mr Smith, describing him as an experienced yachtsman who had competed in many Sydney to Hobart races. "Having sailed many thousand miles with Nick, the Skipper and crew of Bowline are devastated with this loss."

NSW Marine Area Command Super Intendant Joseph McNulty confirmed both men were left with significant head injuries after the yachts were hit with"violent" conditions and revealed what may have happened. The Sydney to Hobart is an Australian tradition, and it is heartbreaking that two lives have been lost at what should be a time of joy.Both vessels have been seized by police for forensic examination.
