The national rebuff to the Indigenous Voice has fuelled Labor fears of a backlash from voters unless the government takes rapid action to deliver results on the cost of living.

The national rebuff to the Indigenous Voice has fuelled Labor fears of a voter backlash unless the government takes rapid action to deliver results on the cost of living as MPs warn key messages about help for households have been lost in the row over the referendum.

But the Voice defeat is also causing anguish among Indigenous people who campaigned for recognition in the Constitution. Some turned on Albanese for “moving on” to other issues and being “insulting and pathetic” in his response to the outcome on Saturday night. “Our focus needs to be on the cost of living and appreciating the pain voters are feeling,” said one MP. Like others, he spoke on condition he was not named so he could speak freely.Labor caucus members acknowledged the challenge but pointed to policy outcomes on climate targets, income support, energy prices, the budget surplus, healthcare, medicine prescriptions and workplace law to argue that the outcomes had been overlooked in the Voice debate.

Some of those who volunteered at polling stations on Saturday expressed frustration at the poor campaigning by the government and the Yes23 group on the Voice, saying the party should launch a review of the defeat to ensure it was not repeated at the general election. Several noted that many electorates voted differently to their Labor MPs on same-sex marriage in 2017 and later endorsed the same MPs at the general election in 2019.Another said the votes in favour of the Voice in the teal seats suggested the challenge would be greater for Dutton than Albanese, given the independent MPs had the advantage of incumbency at the next election.
