The former owner of the Ballarat gold mine where one worker was killed and another injured in a collapse 500m underground was being pursued for unpaid rehabilitation bonds.

The Victorian government is pursuing criminal charges against the former owner of the Ballarat gold mine for unpaid rehabilitation bonds, in the latest regulatory probe into a mine that this week suffered a partial collapse that killed an underground worker.about safety standards at the Ballarat mine on Thursday after a 37-year-old miner, identified in media reports as Kurt Hourigan, was killed when he and another worker were pinned underneath fallen rocks 500 metres underground.

“Assurances have been received from the current owners that they will furnish all outstanding rehabilitation bonds. However, additional bank guarantees are yet to be provided,” said Lewis Hill, a spokesman for Victoria’s Earth Resources Regulator.Ownership of Balmaine Gold and the mine formally passed to Victory Minerals, which is owned by Singaporean company Chrysos P.T.E, on March 6.

The roles and responsibilities of the redundant corporate managerial role were transferred to the Health, Safety, Environment and Community Manager, who reports directly to the CEO.”WorkSafe will investigate the incident and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

“Our thoughts are also with the seriously injured worker who has been taken with life-threatening injuries to the Alfred Hospital. This would have been a terrifying ordeal for those miners.” The mine extracts gold from close to where artisanal miners rebelled against authorities in the famous Eureka Stockade of 1854.
