Investment NSW has put a US trade commissioner recruitment process on hold a day after Mr Barilaro withdrew from the plum role.
The decision to pause the process came after Mr Barilaro stepped back from the job, saying it would be “untenable” given the backlash from colleagues and stiff criticism of the Perrottet government over claims of handing jobs to mates.
Mr Elliott said it was possible Mr Barilaro’s appointment to the trade position was not in the best interests of the state, as he called on Mr Barilaro to do the “honourable” thing by pulling out. Both the Perrottet government and Investment NSW have endured a fortnight of intense scrutiny after announcing that the former deputy premier had been appointed to the role, one of six which he created in his tenure as trade minister.
