Speaking on Nine pre-match, Jim Courier said he had “no doubts” Barty would play well, even with all of the attention and the stage.
The American recovered somewhat after her tricky start - when she could get her power under control, Barty was unable to get into her service games - but two consecutive unforced errors handed the world No.1 another break point. A third meant Barty converted it for 4-1. The trend continued in the next two games, with Barty cruising and Keys made to work hard for 2-2, before the American saw just her second break point of the night at 30-40. Barty successfully serve-and-volleyed to save it.
The consistent, dominant serving that has brought Barty this far then resumed and in just over an hour, she was through. In the second semi-final, big-hitting American Danielle Collins jumped out to a shocking 4-0 lead within 15 minutes against 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek. Just when it looked like the Pole was back in the set, Collins rushed out to a 40-0 lead at 5-4, and after another double-fault on a set point, her fifth opportunity was converted to take the opening set.
