A live-streaming camera is offering insights into a grey-headed flying fox colony in northern NSW, aiming to change public perception that the animals are pests and guide conservation work.
A live stream "BatCam" is monitoring a grey-headed flying fox colony near Taree , on the NSW Mid North Coast.The BatCam will also provide information about how the colony responds during periods of extreme weather and help guide conservation efforts.A new initiative known as BatCam is giving people a glimpse into the normally secret world of Australia's largest native bat.
"BatCam provides an up-close-and-personal experience with these remarkable creatures," NPWS Manning's Great Lakes Area rangers acting team leader, Tabetha Kempe, said. "They can travel up to 50 kilometres at night … they have excellent night vision — they are just a very, very cool bat."The grey-headed flying fox population is in decline due to habitat loss and climate change and Ms Kempe said the camera vision would also help researchers better understand their behaviour in real time.
"We would love to have something like this BatCam, so we are really interested to see how it goes," Dr Davidson said.
