Belarus's President Alexander Lukashenko has been sworn in for a new term in a sudden inauguration conducted with no prior announcement.

The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has been sworn in for a new term in a sudden inauguration conducted with no prior announcement, according to official news agency Beltra.

According to the official results, Mr Lukashenko, who has run the ex-Soviet nation of 9.5 million with an iron fist, won 80 per cent of the vote.The inauguration ceremony, which would normally be publicised in advance as a major state occasion, took place in the capital of Minsk, with several hundred top Government officials present, according to Beltra.

During the ceremony, Mr Lukashenko swore to "serve the people of the Republic of Belarus, [and] respect and protect [the] rights and freedoms of people and citizens".
