Mairin Hughes passed away following a short illness
Mairin was a resident of Maryfield Nursing Home in Dublin's Chapelizod and she celebrated her 109th birthday in May. She passed away on Tuesday following a short illness, surrounded by her Maryfield community, Dublin Live reports.
She was trailblazer for women. Mairin was UCC's oldest known graduate. She graduated from the School of Chemistry with a BSc in the 1930’s, an era when there were very few female students. She relocated to Palmerstown in 1950 with her late husband Francis Hughes and became a teacher in the Vocational School in Ballyfermot where she then taught Chemistry, Physics and Maths for many years.
"She was full of knowledge and kindness. She cared deeply about nature, giving back to her local community and religion played a large part of her life.Mairin is survived by her niece, Nuala and nephew, Michael. Funeral details will be published on RIP.ie.
