A 26-year-old Belgian tourist has died after crashing into a street sign while riding a motorised scooter on a popular holiday island off the coast of North Queensland.

She was rushed to Townsville University Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, but died as a result of her injuries about 9pm. Authorities are also working with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to notify the woman's family in Belgium. "Investigations are continuing and police will prepare a report for the coroner," police said in a statement.
Magnetic Island is a popular holiday destination in North Queensland, located about eight kilometres offshore from Townsville. It is known for its picturesque and mountainous landscape, hiking trails, beaches and native wildlife. Anyone with information for police can contact Policelink
