A senior US official said US President Joe Biden would announce a new weapons package worth nearly $US2 billion for Ukraine would will include a Patriot missile battery to help Kyiv defend itself against barrages of Russian missiles. Mr Zelenskyy's visit, which was organised in secret until details emerged on Tuesday night, is expected to last several hours.
He will hold talks with Mr Biden and top national security aides at the White House, participate in a joint news conference with Mr Biden, and then go to Capitol Hill to address a joint session of the US Senate and House of Representatives. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that Mr Biden invited Mr Zelenskyy to Washington "to underscore the United States' enduring commitment to Ukraine".
