A billionaire is investing in the future of science and technology by providing high school students in western Sydney with specialized tutoring and educational programs. Tech entrepreneur Robin Khuda, founder of AirTrunk, has made a historic $100 million donation to the University of Sydney, the largest single philanthropic donation in New South Wales.
This initiative aims to address the underrepresentation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields by providing tailored support and encouragement to young girls in their educational journey. Khuda's personal experience in the tech industry, where he struggled to find qualified women for technical and leadership roles, inspired this generous act. He observed that western Sydney, compared to other areas, lacked sufficient educational resources to nurture early interest in STEM subjects and guide students towards pursuing university degrees in these fields. Khuda's program will target students from years 7 to 10, offering engaging educational experiences designed to spark their passion for physics, mathematics, and engineering. Initially, it will reach an estimated 40,000 students.The program will operate in two phases. The first phase will focus on early STEM education, aiming to counteract the decline in interest among girls at a young age. University of Sydney vice chancellor Mark Scott emphasized the gender disparity in STEM fields, highlighting that many girls make the decision to abandon STEM pursuits prematurely. The second phase will establish the Khuda Academy, providing 1200 girls in years 11 and 12 with group tutoring and specialized support to excel in their studies. Graduates of the academy will enjoy guaranteed scholarships, covering university tuition, accommodation, and mentorship, enabling them to pursue STEM degrees with greater confidence and financial security. Samantha Jap, a Bachelor of Science student from Fairvale High School, shared her own experience of being one of only four girls in her physics class. She expressed the profound impact such a program could have, providing female students with role models, support networks, and encouragement to thrive in STEM
